Customers say's :
Great water heater. Definitely worthy of consideration.
While i agree that the packaging is a problem, it is not by Rinnai but by the Amazon's vendor who ships it. I purchased the Rinnai natural gas condensing whole-house tankless water heater in early 2010 and love it. The first unit did come damaged but a new unit was shipped and it was fine. What people who look at reviews need to know is whether the unit is good. It is fantastic. We replace a 75-gallon tank that had rusted terribly and was delivering brown water. It had actually failed about 5 years before we replaced it. We were lucky that it never leaked - a typical problem with water tanks. Since we installed our Rinnai tankless water heater, we have never had a problem - and can take showers as long as we want without running out. What most people don't know is that the true measure of water heaters is two-fold: how much does it cost to operate and how much water do you get. Our gas usage has plummeted since we installed the Rinnai. We even added a (high efficiency) gas furnace/AC...

Great Price... Poor Packaging
When I first saw this water heater I was excited about the price. Anywhere locally I would have to spend up to $2500 just to purchase the unit. I decided to go ahead an purchase it and save myself some money. What I had not seen before hand, and I wish I had, was the one customer review that explained that the packaging for the water heater was poorly made. What ended up happening was that the water heater arrived damaged. In my opinion the box was completely destroyed and falling apart (UPS was using tape to hold together) and the unit itself had a dent across the front panel. At first all I wanted was amazon to replace the front panel, but instead they went ahead and replaced the entire unit and sent it overnight to my house, which I greatly appreciated. Good thing to, for when the replacement unit came (the box was in much.. much better condition but still damaged). I also noticed that it also had an extra valve that the first shipment did not (there should be 4...

nice unit - poor packaging
Unit is very nice, appears very efficient, is quiet and works as described. Easy to install if you're comfortable with basic plumbing. Price was pretty reasonable. Even comes with the isolation and gas valves and a temp/pressure relief (DO NOT buy separately, as I did - you don't need it and will save yourself $80-$90!)

The first unit arrived damaged (it had taken a hit on the back edge.) Styrofoam packaging was pretty torn up as well. Wasn't comfortable installing as it was. Returned for a replacement. Replacement unit was damaged too! Not as bad, but the styrofoam was torn up and the front cover was banged up and some plastic trim was broken. I think the box/packaging is just too underengineered for an 80lbs unit. Rinnai needs to pack better. Hopefully this second unit didn't suffer from any internal damage, since it is now installed! Contacted Rinnai for a replacement cover and suggested better packaging - we'll see what happens!

Would be 5 stars...
