Customers say's :
Excellent tankless water heater
I did a lot of research before buying this and having my licensed plumber install it to replace a very old 40 gallon gas water heater. I am very pleased with it, and its price here was better than anything we could find locally. So particularly with the tax credit available this year, I know that I will have paid for this (including installation) within 7 years based on our usage and current gas prices in our area. My plumber liked it too.
If you're thinking about a tankless water heater, however, you must realize that by definition it will take slightly longer to get hot water at your faucets. Right now hot water starts flowing from your big tank as soon as you open that faucet. With a tankless, the computer kicks in when you open the faucet, the gas flows to the burners, the electronic ignition creates flame, and the water is heated as it passes through the heater.
This heater seems to come on instantaneously when a faucet is opened (with a satisfying whoosh) and hot...

Hot, Hot, Hot!
While doing a major remodeling which involved relocating our water heater, we decided to go tankless. Since we were upgrading our shower and installing a garden whirlpool tub, we knew hot water demand would soar. Also, we knew both showers would be running at the same time and the old water heater just would not be able to keep up. Our plumber/HVAC contractor is a specialist in energy efficiency, having previously been an executive with a large national energy efficiency company prior to the bust. His recommendation: the Rinnai NG Tankless Water Heater.

It takes longer to get one installed properly, with the extra venting and the materials required. Don't be part of the learning curve for your installer. Make SURE your installer has experience with tankless installations and ASK FOR REFERENCES. It is a different technology and the installation techniques are different from a traditional water heater.

It is a space saving unit, and extremely quiet. And it...

It Gets the Job Done
I have owned this unit for one year. It has performred flawlessly. I installed it myself but, I had a plumber look over my plans. The most important part of the installation is the gas supply. I ran a three quarter line teed off right from the meter. This insured that the unit would get enough gas. I also ran a copper line from the heater to a six gallon electric tank. This eliminates the wait for hot water and the "sandwich" effect. My electric bill went up by about three dollars a month and my gas bill went down by twelve dollars. It might seem like it would take forever for this unit to pay for itself but, in my circumstance I have to use a direct vent or powervent water heater. These units cost about seven hundred dollars and carry only a five or six year warranty. We need to use a water softener so the tanks usually would only last about six years. This unit has a twelve year warranty so it will pay for itself after six years because it will last twice as long. We have four...

Check your vent pipe before ordering
This hot water tank heater was bought in order to replace an 11 year old tankless hot water heater. It seemed like it would not be a big deal to take a wall mounted tankless heater out and replace it with another. Wrong! This Rinnai product requires Rinnai venting. The old HWH was taken out and the new one installed, but we continued to get error codes. We called our local gas company and had them come out to help figure out the problem and they told us our venting would not work. Turns out they sell Rinnai products and this HWH is an older model, they did not have the correct vent pipes. The vent pipes had to be ordered. We had to take the new HWH out and re-install the old one that was only giving us lukewarm water. One week later and almost an additional $700, we finally have the new HWH installed.Yes, I have great hot water now and I am hoping that the high efficiency unit will earn back the additional cost for the heater and the install over a period of time. Turns out the local...

Customers say's :
Bought this product
I bought and installed this unit. It works great and has all the items needed to hook up, minus the wire for 120 volt and the controller wire (bell wire or speaker wire).
The cons is the packaging as described in other review. The box looked like it had been through a war zone. The unit cabinet was dented a little but I decided it was not worth the effort to reject it from Fed EX If you buy one make sure you are home when it is delivered and open the box, request for signature upon delivery as I requested.
The controller and the service valves and the relief valve comes with the unit. It does not say this in the description.
Fast delivery even at Christmas rush. I gave it a four because of the handling of the supplier for packaging a heavy unit with only the display box.

Terrible packaging, and much slower initial response than old gas 40 gallon water heater
The unit came from Amazon almost completely out of the box, plastic parts broken, box was half open. Almost sent it back right then, but I had the installer lined up for the next day, permits pulled, inspections pre-scheduled, gas company etc. etc.

The unit is initially very slow to respond and provides adequate hot water after 5 minutes or so.

Shipping problem was very bad.

Unit is adequate, not as good as I expected.

we will see how much money it saves on gas versus wasted water?

Rinnai water heat is excellent
Very pleased with this purchase. It has been running for about a week now and replaced an old, rusted out 50 gallon standard water heater that had failed on me at the worst of times.

First, however, I have to say that the Rinnai packaging was terrible. This is the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars. The box was shredded and the styrofoam inside was broken into little pieces. Miraculously the heater was in great shape except for a few tiny dents on the case. Since my old water heater was already dead I decided to just go ahead and keep it as-is.

Installation was a snap, and only required routing the utility lines outside for hot and cold water and electricity.

Getting up and running took no configuration adjustments to the water heater at all. It fires the moment water begins to run and stops as soon as water is turned off. There is maybe a one second delay as the burner heats the water up, and this is completely unnoticeable if you're used to...

My First
I am very satisified with the new hot water heater which replaced an electric tank hot water heater. The gas company installed the new line for free and a a $1,000 rebate for instaling a gas tankless. I installed it myself having had never worked with gas before but the gas company and the building inspector were both impressed with the install. The very first thing I did was to turn on every hot water source in the house full blast and this unit kept up with the demand supplying the 120 degrees I had the unit set at. I researched and it came down between this unit and another well known brand - this condensing unit, while a little more in cost and a little heavier had the best energy rating and I look forward to energy $ savings. A condensing unit uses the hotter exhaust and recycles the heat which otherwise goes into the air, to help heat the water - more efficency, less hot exhaust into the air. I love it that I am not heating a tank full of water 24/7/365 with electric hog...

my gas bill has dropped by A LOT
So all of those reviews I've read who say their gas bill was only a little different, let me just say, mine went from $60 a month to $8 a month because of this water heater. I love how it doesn't go hot cold hot cold while you are showering. It stays at the exact same temp the whole time so you never have to touch the knob, unless you are turning the water off. It does take longer for the water to get hot, than my old tank heater (what's all this about it being "on demand"?) but that's not a big deal for me. My handy man couldn't figure out how to install it, so make sure you use a smart one.

Perfect for my family!!!
Recently, just bought this Rinnai R98LSi Natural Gas Tankless Water heater Indoor unit... it's perfect for my family and my size house...we have 3 bathrooms..... this unit is ideal for a house with 2 to 3 bathrooms...I've kept the temp setting on this unit at 115 F degrees. It has built-in remote & temp control panel. We now get continuous and simultaneous hot water supply in all 3 bathrooms, all sinks, and appliances.... for kids 115 F could be too hot, so you may want to mix a little cold water during showers as lower temp setting takes a few minutes longer for hot water to flow thru the tap...

although it is dubbed as "instant" water heater but keep in mind that sitting cold water in the pipes would still need to be pushed out before hot water flows... so you may need to waste a little water as you would normally let go during winters ....idea is that you want continuous hot water in multiple bathrooms if simultaneously people are taking showers in all bathrooms at the...

A Review from someone who installed and is using a Rinnai 98 Lsi
If you are handy-you can do this with a little time (6 hours) and some advise from this review. As far as the product is concerned the Rinnai 98 Lsi N (N= Natural Gas) It will heat the water to meet you Hot water needs (3 baths and two teenagers). Enough said! You won't miss your water heater!

3/4 to 1 inch gas line is required. 1 inch if you have runs from the meter longer than 60 ft. to the tankless heater

It will cost you another $300.00 to install only because you need to use Rinnai or Ubbink vent pipes for the exhaust (caustic and hot so no typical galvanized pipe or PVC here). I used Grainger for my pipes
You will need this even though it is not mentioned anywhere in the installation manual or on the web Ubbink 224064 vertical 4" adaptor it is hard to find you might try [...]wat-rinnai-0034.html

A VERY HIGH QUALITY PRODUCT AT A FANTASTIC PRICE
I had this installed in a rental, the reputation of Rinnai was outstanding and I purchased this thru Amazon third party at considerably less than half price ($649.00), it was selling for over $1,500.00, now the price is $800.00 with a 97% Thermal Efficiency I'm sure my tenant will love the savings, and you will too.
Note it comes with Rinnai isolator valves

Amazing Unit!
I purchased this unit because I was replacing an old Ruud 50 water heater and wanted to up-grade. This Rinnai RC80eN works great. There is no shortage of hot water and I can adjust the temperature to accommodate my preferences. Great buy.

Great water heater, but check your gas supply line before buying!
I love this water heater. Amazingly efficient, lots of available rebates, and a great deal on Amazon. Unfortunately, I didn't check first to see what it would cost to upgrade from a 1/2" gas line to the 3/4" line required by this heater. It ended up being an expensive install, but will be worth it in the end.

Customers say's :
Pretty good, but has an irritating design flaw.
When it works, it's pretty good. Doesn't have quite the same "push" as a tank water heater, as there isn't a 300-pound column of water being pulled towards the outlet in the tank by gravity. However, as advertised, it will keep water flowing at a constant temperature. You can take a shower for 5 minutes or 5 hours, and the temperature will never change!

Now, the design flaw. I had to screw around with this thing for about an hour at 3AM to figure out that if it loses power, you have to drain the water tank. If you don't do this, the calibration it tries to run when it's powered on will fail. Fortunately, there is a reasonably quick solution.

The following was adapted from page 15 of the manual: [...] - Use it at your own risk. If your heater doesn't work, maybe just call a plumber. (Hand them a printout of this if they get stumped.)

Here's the steps:
- Disconnect power
- Make sure NOT to stand in front of the MAINTENANCE valves (they open to...

Works Great without "design flaws"
The lower capacity 7.5 would have been adequate for my two bedroom house, but my plumber recommended the 9.4 because the "isolator valves" are included with the 9.4, but not the 7.5. If you get the 7.5 you'll have to pay about $100 for these valves. A no-brainer, why not get the 9.4 for about the same price as the 7.5 and you get the larger flow capacity as a bonus. I wondered why I saw no mention of this in the numerous product descriptions on the internet. I was therefore pleased to find the valves included in the box. Essentially, you're getting the higher capacity heater for about the same price as the 7.5 model!

I'm not experiencing any of the "design flaws" described in previous reviews. I have had to turn off the gas frequently during my remodel. No problem with the heater working perfectly after gas is turned on, with no adjustments or procedure necessary.

As far as adjusting the temperature, this is easily done with an included touch pad with digital...

worked well through the recent arctic blast
This heats really efficiently and quickly. The plumbers we have talked to also say it is a great product. Only problem is that when we changed from a tank to tank-less it revealed flaws in our plumbing. That cost another couple hundred to fix, but we still aren't sure why the flaws were more pronounced with the tank-less when the water is hotter and the heated water comes to the faucet faster...either way, I only mention for reference.

Great tankless water heater
My oil fired 50 gallon hot water heater finally gave out. I wanted to go tankless and to switch over to propane. Natural gas is not available in my area and for a whole house electric would not be very efficient. I was actually looking to go with the rc80i as my well pump does not pump more than 8 gpm, but oddly enough this unit was less expensive on Amazon. I purchased this along with the 21" exhaust vent pipe. A couple of things I want to make clear to help others is that the water and gas valves DO come with the unit. You do not need to purchase these separately. The ultra efficient Rinnai units come with the valves saving around $80.00. The 21" vent can be cut and made shorter as well.

When ordering make sure you get the proper unit. They make units for Propane or Natural gas along with internal or external mounting options. Some of you southerners can mount these outside where it never freezes. Most will need the internal mount units.

I had a plumber friend...

Waste not, want not
We had a 15 yr old 75G water heater give out in a house we just bought 3 months ago. The home warranty agreed to cover the replacement cost of $1500, as quoted by our plumber. But rather than panicking and clambering for another tank, we sucked it up & began a water-boil with sponge bath regimen. While uncomfortable, this allowed us to think about what we really wanted to do. After a couple of days of research, we decided that whole-house tankless technology was up to snuff, and narrowed it down to Noritz and Rinnai. We researched plumbers & ended up using one that only does tankless installations of these 2 brands. The Rinnai 98I was recommended by the plumber for our 3300sqft home with 4 shower heads.

The old beast removed, and the 98i installed... we've been running on it for 1 week. The thing that makes me happiest of all is the hot water heater burner never cuts on, UNTIL WE NEED IT. We left it at the default temp of 120, and that's hot enough for us, but it...

Simply Amazing
We replaced a 7 year old 80 gallon (the most inefficient ever) electric tank. It freed up a 240 in the fuse box and dropped the electric bill $81 average the last two months. Uses very little propane and propane is cheaper for us anyway. A little longer to get hot water but nothing bothersome. 120 is plenty hot for us and installation is a breeze. You will need a condensing pump. I had the plumber put an additional outlet in for the unit and pump. Works flawlessly and looks to be easy to service. Wonderful investment. Love it.

According to Rinnai, Amazon.com is not an offical Rinnai online dealer
Before purchasing this boiler from Amazon, be sure to have a Rinnai certified boiler installer agree to perform the installation. It's difficult to find installers who will agree to install appliances bought from another vendor, and if you end up installing the boiler yourself, you can forget about the warranty. When you call Rinnai with a problem they will ask where you bought it and who installed it. Trust me, any hope of a warranty claim is gone when you say "I bought it from Amazon.com and I installed it myself".

Rinnai is very good
After much discussion, research, and general concern about the higher cost of tankless water heaters(at least initially) I purchased this unit. It has to be installed by a plumber that has been certified by Rinnai- or the warranty is voided. But after seeing how it was installed-I would leave it up to the professionals. There is a lot of various discussion about the pro's and con's of tankless systems on the internet-but I for one am very happy with this unit. I think you are only as good as your installer- because improper installation is the root cause of customer issues(according to the master plumber that installed mine). But this is what I am most happy about, 1) the sticker on the unit states that the annual operating expenses are $196, 2) I can actually fill my large corner tub-for the first time. Also Rinnai has a very good warranty, the plumber also pointed out the since these units are compartmentalized, if something does fail, years down the road- you are dealing with...

lots of consistent hot water
Ok, this is long, but I go through some of the install details. In short, very happy with the unit. Water temperature is consistent, heats up as fast or nearly as fast as old 50 Gal, depending on which faucet you're measuring from. Enough capacity for large homes. Install is capable of being done by advanced DIY'ers.

I installed the Natural Gas version of the RC98 recently to replace a 50 Gallon tank that just wasn't cutting it. We have a 3.5 bath house with 4,000 sqft finished, along with an unfinished 2,000 sqft basement ready for another two bathrooms. Having to wait 30-40 minutes between showers and making sure that laundry or the dishwasher wasn't just run is only a minor hassle for a family of three, until we have guests and we have 8 or more people trying to get ready. Really, this wasn't a huge immediate problem, but something that needed to be tackled reasonably soon.

As far as solutions, we considered putting in a 100 Gallon tank, or a second 50...

Absolutely love it
I bought this to free up some space in a rather small closet that my 30 gallon tank was in. Myself and a friend did the install with a breeze in about 3 hours. We used unistrut lag bolted to the studs then bolted the unit to that for ease of hanging due to its weight. Once installed I turned the gas and water on and had hot water within a few minutes. I am able to run 3 faucets at once with equal hot water to each one. WE LOVE IT and would recommend this to anyone looking to purchase a new hot water heater.

great unit so far--better reviews than my former Takagi that lasted 9yrs with no maintenance, so this time I added a couple shut off valves so I can maintain it better-need to keep the mineral corrosion down to a minimum so the burners work better and longer.

really nice
this heater has now been installed for a month and gets hot faster and with better reliability than the troublesome Bosch it replaced.

Fantastic price/purchase.
This is a great product with an absolute great price. It runs 3 showers with no problem and heats great. Never would have found this deal anywhere else but on Amazon. Beautiful!

Hot water forever!
This unit performs beyond my expectations. The endless stream of hot water is sure to delight everyone. Lots of people to bathe? No problem with this water heater. If you are considering a water heater replacement, this is for you.

Wonderful!!!!
Very nice. This replaced my 12 year old unit that started giving trouble. It was never cleaned yearly like it should have been so no complaints with the old unit. This is a size bigger than I had. Now running 2 standard showers, a shower with body sprays, washer and dishwasher all at the same time. This unit came with the water T Valves so you can clean it. I will def do that this go round as I should had with the first one since I'm on well water. Very happy with the performance!!!

Works well
It was installed during our kitchen remodel about two months ago.
It works well. No one in my family has ever complained about not having hot water!!!
Also, I just tested it by turning on two showers, three bathroom faucets, and one kitchen faucet. Water remained plenty hot.
If you plan to buy a tankless water heater, consider hiring a plumber who specializes in installation of these things. It's not as simple as the tank one. It requires a correct choice of gas pipe diameter vs. length of the run and proper venting (if condensing type). Our regular plumber first installed an undersized pipe and then did not know that you need to open the vent, which makes the unit quit in a few minutes. I had to help him figure it out. And if we didn't catch the undersized gas pipe (by accident) I would've been writing this review complaining about the unit not operating as advertized: it can't if it doesn't get enough gas flow. Again, the unit is great, but in retrospect I...

Terrible customer service
Contractor installed 4 weeks ago and doesn't work right. Rinnai response is to have installer work with their Tech over the phone at contractors expense!. They will sell to any contractor/plumber but do not have this installed except by an authorized Rinnai representative. Do not believe advertised unit capacity (shower heads). You need to calculate water and gas flows to make sure it will provide sufficient hot water (and it won't for my needs despite the advertising saying it will). Rinnai 800 customer service is terrible (representative laughed at me. I have no hot water and she is laughing at me on the phone).
Never would have purchased a Rinnai if I knew what I know now.

WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!
i joined amazon prime and had it shipped next day air for $3.99. it arrived in perfect condition. had my plumber install it and I can honestly say that a tankless water heater is the best thing ever for your home. no more worring about running out of hot water.

Rinnai RL75e tankless water heater
My experience with Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters goes back a few years so this is not my first impression of the technical side of the brand. Although I have serviced many of the various models Rinnai makes, something that should be done annually by the way, this is the first in my own home. My wife and I chose to go this route for efficiency sake and plan to keep the setting at factory defaults to maintain the exceptional 12 year warranty. Ours is a retrofit install which got complicated but new installed are best done by those with SERVICE in mind. Access is important along with good water and gas flow. Thankless water heaters are a bit different in operation than tank versions as they take a short time to get to the set temperature but that is only a few seconds. No more keeping 30 or40 gallons of water hot while you aren't home all day or gone for a weekend. All the best to you and yours!!

Things to consider
The Rinnai water heater works well and saves energy but there are some issues that are specific to these water heaters and I am going to tell you the whole truth.

Venting: The exhaust/combustion air vent is tested and listed for the unit and you can't use any other vent. It uses outside air for combustion and is very safe. The direct vent sealed combustion vent allows Rinnai to be installed in bath rooms and bed rooms where traditional B-Vent water heaters cannot. There are limitations of how far away and were you can terminate the vent, check out the installation manual for that.

Hot Water: It will make endless hot water until you turn off the tap, a minute, an hour, a week. It can only supply so much at a time, depending on your cold water temperature it will only run two or three fixtures at once. It is an `on demand' water heater, not an `instant' water heater, hot water will take longer to arrive at the fixture than it will from a tank water...

No Support
Unless you are a licensed contractor purchasing this unit for installation, DO NOT BUY IT ONLINE. Rinnai will not support you, basically saying they will only work on problems with a licensed contractor. Even if you purchased it online and had a licensed contractor install it, once the contractor is done and gone, you will not be able to get support from Rinnai. My unit has a defective leaking cold water isolation valve, not part of the unit itself, but a part shipped with the unit.

No complaints and I would recommend
We have had ours now for about 36 months and it works extremely well. There can be a delay in hot water, or a cold water "sandwich" if you change temperature quickly or turn off and then on after having it on for 15 seconds or more. It probably takes 30 seconds for ours to really heat up, and maybe 40 to get hot in the dead of winter...this is slower than a tank heater and the only detriment I can note or am aware of at this point. Puts out plenty of HOT water for us as we can have 2 showers and laundry going in the dead of winter...it is no problem. We adjusted our tank to put out 140 degree water and we love it...especially in the winter. My wife used to fill our tub, and the old water heater would actually run out of hot water.....never a problem again! I think beyond 3 uses at one time(shower, laundry, dishwash, etc) running you would have a capacity problem...but how often do you do that? There are two of us here most of the time with the occasional guests....2 1/2 bath, and...

Great unit - great price
We've got three of this model at various locations and so far they are working great and saving us money! Unfortunately though, my girlfriend can take showers that now seem eternal, losing a little there. But a real decent unit for the money, just be sure to use the specified pressure relief for safety.

Pleased
This water heater is nice, we have had it installed now for 3 weeks and it works great! The only reason I didnt give it a 5 star was the box it came in was flimsy and lacked in my opinion the proper packing, so you guessed it, it got damaged in the trip! The front cover was slightly bent, just a cosmetic issue but still a little agravating.

Great Water Heater

Hot water made simple
Wow, this is an impressive product. Tankless water heating has come a long way. Right out of the box this appliance is easy to install, has easy to understand controls. The key to success with the product is to pay close attention to sizing the gas supply piping correctly, installing the factory recommended venting, and calculating hot water flow demand and staying within the supply capability of the heater. In addition to water flow, install a water filter on the water supply if there is indication of debris. Hard water should be addressed before sending it to the unit.If you follow the install manual to the letter, you should be very satisfied with the product.

Works Great
It does the Job! Well built and designed. I have two bathrooms and it is able to supply all the hot water we need no problems in running several items at once that use hot water. I had it installed and it was easy according to the local plumbing company, looks good on the wall too...

Excellent product.
I installed this myself with some tools and knowledge borrowed from a master gas fitter. It was a very simple installation. I didn't run a return line, I don't live in Denver (anymore). the exhaust pipe I ran was under three feet. I can see why Rinnai wants only trained professionals installing; it could get very complicated. but I kept it simple.
runs very quiet and produces plenty of hot water. I'm not sure of the savings over the old power vented unit. My friend the gas fitter was dubious about savings, but I'm confident it will save a few hundred dollars a year, that old heater was costing me about 100 dollars a month in the winter.
I have quite short runs of pipe to my shower, kitchen sink, but the wait for hot water is noticeably longer, but re circulation lines would reduce the efficiency, so I'll live with it. Once the hot water starts flowing it's great
I had to run new pipes 3/4in steel because of the high BTUs. Mounting it was a bit awkward, but not...

Excellent Product
I could not be happier with this purchase. The heater is very compact, makes virtually no noise, and is extremely efficient. I have had this unit in operation for 3 months and have never had an issue with this heater meeting my hot water demand. There is no noticeable increase in the amount of time it takes for hot water get to fixtures.

This is the most efficient model made by Rinnai, check with your gas company for rebates as I was able to recoup the entire cost of the heater. I switched over from a 80 gallon electric tanked heater. My electric bill dropped dramatically (30%+) and I didn't even notice an increase in my gas bill (less than 5$/month).

Tank less water heater
I love this unit. The 8 gallon per minute of hot water is plenty for both of my bathrooms, and kitchen. The only challenge installing was the condensing drain. Every time I hooked up the drain, the unit stopped working in the middle of my showers. If I let the unit drip in a bucket it worked fine. We figured out that a breather hose had to be put on the drain, and then it worked great. Also, the delay of hot water is a bit slower. With my old unit, it took 20 seconds for the water to be hot in the faucet, now it take 40 seconds, but once it comes through, it stays hot continuous. The cost of this unit is about $15 per month to run compared to $60 per month with the old tank unit. I would highly recommend this item to any one looking for a good tank less water heater. Once the bugs were worked out, it works great.

Very happy with my purchase
I picked the Rinnai brand after reading and hearing good things about this brand. I found this particular unit at a significant savings because it is the prior model. As a result I picked this up for less than the less efficient lower capacity model. I installed this myself. It wasn't hard but did take a long time as I had to re-route all the piping - both gas and water so lots of new connections needed to be made. The job took me about 12 hours from start to finish.

The unit works great and the water supply is more than sufficient for our family of four. I've not tried it yet with more than 2 concurrent users but it fully satisfies two showers or a shower and the dishwasher running at the same time.

As an extra bonus, my water is now softer than it was before without my hot water tank.
