Advanced microprocessor technology ensures that the water temperature never deviates from the set point. No scalding. The electronic control system in the DHC-E does not allow the water temperature to go above 125;F (52;C), which eliminates the possibility that scalding may occur. On the other hand, 125;F (52;C) water is sufficiently hot for most uses. Simple design of plumbing system. There is no need for a T & P valve, drain or mixing valve. Finally, hot water at my kitchen sink
I've put up for years with having to run the hot water at my kitchen sink for 3 minutes before I got hot water, which was actually only warm. I live in a house where the water heater, powered by propane, is about 40 feet from the kitchen. I installed the DHCE-10 in a weekend myself, it fit on the back wall right under the sink. The hardest part was running the 40 amp circuit over a 60 foot run for the power. Plumbing wasn't bad, this unit uses the cold water for the inlet, I turned off the hot water valve under the sink and capped it off and teed into the cold water line. The outlet side of the heater is teed, one to the hot water inlet on the faucet, one to the dishwasher.

Before having the DHCE-10 I would have to keep the propane heater turned almost as high as it would go so the water would be hot at the kitchen sink. There was a fair amount of temperature drop over a 40 foot run in a slab foundation. After powering up the DHCE-10, I had 120 degree water at my kitchen...

Only lasted 4 years
Pros
I installed two E10,s about four years ago. Love them. Installation was a breeze. They maintain constant water temperature because of the digital controls. Zero maintenance.

Cons
One just malfunctioned. The digital display is dark, so the power supply must be bad.

Ordered a replacement because I wanted a direct replacement.

German Engineering
After two months of use, I am very satisfied. This 12 KW unit supplies one kitchen sink plus one full bath (with shower) in the guest suite. There is never a problem with instant hot water, and you can take as long in the shower as you like. They make higher capacity units for the same enclosure in case you have multiple bathroom or laundry demands. It was a pleasure to get rid of that wasteful, ugly tank and use the space for alternate needs. In my case, I turned a utility room into a guest kitchenette. Keep in mind you will need to have room in your load center for the added power demand and install the required circuit breakers and wiring according to your local code. Stiebel Eltron specifies the manufacturer's requirements in their (pdf) installation instructions. The extra power demand will likely save power over a tank-type heater that has much more heat loss while idle. Even if you need to hire a qualified electrician, this is a pay-back improvement from tank type water...

Stiebel Tankless Water Heater in Community Theater
We have a 100+ year old school building that has been using a 40 gal conventional hot water tank to heat water for our kitchen sink and some of the restroom sinks. When it failed, we considered replacing it with another tank type, but then decided to investigate a tankless system. This Stiebel 12 Plus unit was perfect for our application, since the restrooms and the kitchen sink are used only occasionally. Installation was straightforward, the unit works perfectly and I'm sure it will save us money over the long term, since it's only using electricity when there's a demand for hot water, instead of keeping 40 gal of water hot all the time. We did a lot of research on various tankless units beforehand, including shopping the local plumbing supply and big box stores. This unit was by far the best value, and the initial cost was only slightly higher than another conventional tank-type unit. The unit came from Amazon in only a few days with no shipping charge, and only weighs 13 lbs.

Fine for Small Use Area
I installed this in my office space. It runs the bathroom sink and the shower in that building. It's able to get the water up to temperature without issues, and performs reasonably well with respect to water flow. Water flow in the shower is definitely diminished, so I suggest you replace your shower head with something that is between 1.25GPM and 1.5GPM and not exceed that. Also, don't expect to turn on the sink and the shower at the same time.

All that said, you really need to consider your application when you size these. There are two important factors. First, the ambient temperature of your water. If you're getting your water fed from a glacier, this will impede the units ability to heat fast enough. Second, if you're expecting to run anything that's going to exceed it's rated GPM at ambient water temperature X(see manufacturers chart) then you need a bigger unit. It's that simple. Larger sized units are not significantly more expensive, but they obviously draw a lot...

Great Water Heater
This water heater is absolutely superb--wish I had found it 10 years ago. My major bath is on the far end of the
house and hot water tap can run for a long time wasting water. This system is on a water softener with KCL so can't
use my water circulator anymore. Very easy to install with enclosed instructions. My wife is so happy with this instant hot water
I can hardly stand it.

Best 120V tankless you can buy in my opinion
In late 2010 I bought and installed a PowerStar 120V tankless water heater to replace an old 10-gallon tank water heater that provides hot water for a kitchen sink. I was limited in options due to having a single-pole 30 Amp breaker feeding the circuit with #10 AWG wire. Be aware before buying that you must have a single-pole 30 Amp breaker powering your circuit. In most cases where you are replacing a tank style heater, you will likely have to upgrade your breaker to 30 Amp rated and your wire to #10 AWG (most 120V circuits are #12 or 14 AWG on a 20 Amp breaker). The PowerStar, manufactured by Bosch, is by comparison much more cheaply made - I base this on the quality of parts viewable when the unit cover is removed. The water would only get lukewarm, maybe 100 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, which is not very hot at all. The unit would also intermittently fail to heat the water at all. Not very impressive. At the time, it was the only 120V tankless water heater available...

Good engineering, Disappointing Results
Had high expectations that this nice looking German engineered device would solve demand for instant hot water at a single sink. Not exactly "instant". It takes a while for the water to even get warm. The problem is the water needs to flow slowly in order to benefit from the electrical heater. Naturally that means a very low flow output. A small tank device would be better...but alas, is much more expensive to run in order to keep the water hot 24 hours a day. Also don't forget...This requires a new 30amp electrical circuit and water by-pass shut-off valves to be installed. Not for the handyman-challenged.

Stiebel
The Stiebel heater worked just a I expected. It was quite easy to setup and it heats the water adequately. Great product.

Great Little Water Heater
We've experienced a flawless install and operation from our Stiebel Eltron. Unlimited hot water and lower electric bills are the two big positives for this appliance, but I also like that it's about the size of a picture frame hanging on the wall and opened up a lot of space in our utility room when we replaced our old tank water heater.

Only thing to keep in mind is that this is not a drop in replacement for an existing tank water heater. We had to have an electrician come out and wire up a 60 Amp 6 gauge wire from the breaker box to the water heater for a nominal fee (about $200), other than that the plumbing and mounting was super easy, both of which I did myself in about an hour's time (thanks to Gatorbite plumbing fixtures).

We are really enjoying the Stiebel Eltron and would highly recommend it to anybody looking for an electric tankless water heater.

-- Update March 2012 --

Had it installed in early 2010 and couldn't be happier with...

Stiebel Eltron lies about Tempra 12 Plus
This unit is a piece of crap for what it is supposed to do. I researched tankless water heaters and finally decided on this model after reading what a fine company Stiebel Eltron is supposed to be. Their spiel was that this was a whole house unit that would easily service a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house. My house is 2 bedroom, 1 bath. After spending 500 plus dollars for the unit, 300 plus dollars for licensed plumber to install it right, and 200 plus dollars for licensed electrician to install correct breaker and wiring, I have a unit that is so noisy when hot water is running in the kitchen or bathroom, it almost drowns out the tv or conversations. After talking with the tech at Stiebel Eltron, he sent me a new unit for the noise. The new one is worse than the old one. It takes 15 to 19 minutes to fill the bath tub and all the time listening to the unit growl in the water heater closet. I would never purchase another product from this company.

Worth buying!!!
For those who don't know, Stiebel Eltron make the best electric tankless heaters on the market. They have the digital thermostat, and it will keep your water to the exact temperature you set regardless of demand. I set mine to 106'F and it is exactly 106'F, regardless of if I have just 1 tap open or 5 plus a shower, dishwasher, etc...

As for installation it was fairly basic. Just an in and out for the plumbing and the electrical was fairly straightforward. You need 3 x 60A 208-204V lines plus a ground. That means 6 spaces in your breaker panel. This is the biggest electric tankless that can go on a 200A service. Anything larger and you need a 400A service. I am a licensed electrician so instalation was simple for me. Otherwise I would definitely hire an electrician to do the hookup. It can be intimidating to do the electical yourself with all the options. Do you use flex, tech cable, just plain old lumex, etc... I piped mine in using EMT and #6 wire, although...

Its FABULOUS!... with a couple of caveats.
I am very happy with this purchase. Mounting the Tempra 29 Plus and the required new electrical box in the closet was as easy as 8 screws. Wiring it all up was a little more work. The plumbing is simple if you put it where your tank was. And losing our old 50 gallon tank gave us some new closet room for the house! The product itself is absolutely fabulous and is only about 4-5 inches deep and maybe 15"x15"ish. It looks very well made. (Those Germans always make good stuff!) Once installed, your water will easily get hotter than you can stand and I felt no fluctuation in the shower when the washing machine and a sink were also running hot. The ONLY negatives I see are 1)the dedicated line requirements and 2)a couple of our fluorescent fixtures flicker/strobe slightly when hot water is running. I feel like that might simply be due to cheap bulbs or something because the "flicker" is isolated to just two fixtures in the whole house. Bottom line: Buy it. Just be prepared for a little...

Fabulous - simple to install and instant HOT, HOT water
After doing the research on tankless electric water heater, I went for this unit over similarly priced models from Rheem and others, simply because it is German. Yes, I fell for the 'quality, technical superiority, etc' German mantra and boy, am I glad I did.

The unit arrives in a secure, heavy duty shipping box secured by molded styrofoam inserts to protect the product from shifting en route and from then on out, it is a dream to install and use.

Plumbing is simple with either CPVC or copper (totally recommend the sharkbite / gatorbite fittings if you're using copper) and a close examination of the workmanship on the welds for the heating vessels inside the unit show that the heater is of high quality. There are five mounting points to mount the unit to the wall and it is so small (about the size of an early 1990's VCR), that just mounting directly on drywall with drywall anchors is more than secure enough.

The only complication comes with the...

We have used this product before in 2 of our cabins. I made a mistake in using the 110v heaters before, which did not put out enough hot water and our campers complained. Switched to the 220v and everyone is happy now. I still have not installed the 4 new ones that I have on hand, but will do as soon as the camping season is over. Just need time to reinstall the new ones. Will need one more of the 220v when we finish the last cabin. Will have 7 cabins on line when it is finished.
You may want to check us out at "whitsendranch.com" to see what all we are doing. In fact, you may even want to come on up and camp with us. Tennessee state (main man) said we have the best campsite in the state and he has seen them all.

I had the tank-less water heater installed by a professional, but the water gets hot then cold. This is poorly designed. Also, I bought it for three hand washing sinks and only one accelerator came with the water heater. I cannot buy accelerators anywhere that have a 0.5 gal/min. flow rate, which is needed to keep the water hot while the faucet is open.

Instant on water heater Stieble Eltron
Works great and provides enough water for two showers running at same time. Install was simple but make sure wiring is correct, or unit will not start up. Pulls a lot of amps so have to use number 6-8 wire to be safe. Instruction manual on install a little sketchy.

great water heater
i purchased this unit to replace a bosch primstar unit that was only 3 years old. bosch says there unit has a 10 year warranty. THATS A LIE. BOSCH REFUSED TO STAND BEHIND THERE UNIT. SAID IT IS ONLY 10 YEAR ON THE ELEMENTS. NOT WHAT THE BOX SAID OR WHAT THE OWNERS MANUAL SAID. The stiebel unit was easy to install and holds the temp without gitting cold then hot then cold like the bosch did. this unit is smaller than the bosch was as does a much better job than the bosch ever thought of. if you need a water heater this is the brand you want

Tankless hot water
Chose heater after discussing with local building supplier. Build quality was excellant and good warranty. Works without issues. Uses little space, a bonus.

Do not purchace this product.
I have to eat this one because Crogan will not accept a return, which by the way, I could not find anywhere in writing. For that reason alone I would not purchase any product from this supplier. I had very realistic expectations for this little heater. All I wanted was warm water to wash my hands and face in a small sink. Even with the low flow aerator this product was unacceptable and I immediately removed it. Please note that the owner of Crogan has put in a review--which is not true.

Very "Mini" Water Heater
I wanted a mini water heater in my remodeled bathroom. After having it professionally installed, the plumber told me that he thinks the until is working, but....there is no hot water coming out of the faucet. I called the company and told them the unit clicks on but no hot water.

They told me i must use the .65 per minute water flow limiter that comes with the unit. I didn't see one when i opened the box, so i went around looking in three different places for a water limiter of .65.

Most people laughed when I told them what i wanted, saying that amount would barely wash your hands at that low of a flow rate and mixing it with cold water might make it feel instantly cool.

It seems that this unit is a waste of money. Perhaps a mini water tank would be a better purchase.

Stiebel Eltron Mini tankless heaters are not designed for use with typical faucet
These heaters are only designed to heat water if it is flowing at .5 gallons per minute, which is a trickle. A typical faucet is 1.5-2.2 gallons per minute. So if you want to use this at a sink to wash your hands, it will not work.

This will only work with the little tiny hot water taps.

However, it is marketed as if it will work with regular faucets, so I give it one star, and would give it negative stars if possible for this deception.

Connectors not Included, heater works well
We just received our tankless water heater and, upon opening the box, did NOT find the flexible connectors described in the Product Description. This is what the Product Description says: "(2) Flexible Water Heater Connectors are included FREE with every Stiebel Eltron Tempra model." No other seller of this product (including the Stiebel Eltron website) mentions those flexible connectors so we believe this description is incorrect. We haven't connected it yet to see if it works BECAUSE we did not get the flexible connectors and so we'll have to purchase them separately. This is definitely disappointing.

Update: After three months, the water heater is working great. It turns on with as little as 1/2 gpm water flow rate, which is much better than a previous brand we owned. When we draw hot water for the washing machine (which is right beside the water heater), the indicator light blinks, showing that the flow rate is being exceeded (and, thus, heating is intermittent)...

Tempra 12B
Tempra 12B works fine for a small application. It takes 30 seconds to deliver hot water but it works well for showering. I would not want anything any smaller in power.

So far, exceeded expectations
I installed the water heater about a month ago, so far it works like a charm. I leave in Florida in a one bedroom 1 bath codo. Take long showers with no problem at all. For my taste I have the temperature set at 100 F, that is more than enough for me in south Florida. I will write back when I get my full month electrical bill with the new unit installed. Well recommended for a one bedroom apartment.

Compact, efficient, effective
Note: The product image is not quite right as it shows another model than the 36.

I installed a Tempra 36 in a new application (not a replacement). It does everything it says it does and without taking up a huge space. It was easy to install and easy to use. The best part of this product is the endless hot water at a preset temperature.

You MUST review the flow rates and temperature rise charts to be sure it is adequate for your application. If you have colder water or want more water for your shower, the unit may only be able to keep up with one, not two or more people taking a shower at the same time. There are no electric units on the market that are as powerful as the propane ones, so make sure you've done your homework before installing.

The unit WILL draw its rated power (36kw) if you ask it to, so make sure you have enough power. It takes THREE 60 amp breaker PAIRS, which is a LOT of panel space. Check this also before installing.

great product..but not for those who don't want to upgrade electric supply
Our old hot water heater corroded and sprung a leak, so we had to buy something to replace it. The Tempra 36 we bought is working wonderfully. It took some time (electric company was slow) to upgrade the electrical panel to support the Tempra 36, but we are adding on to our home in the next couple of years anyway. We were going to have to upgrade the electrical panel to add on to our home. We can run both of our showers at the same time along with a sink and still get hot water as hot as we can stand it. We love the dial on the front of the unit that allows us to adjust the temperature in seconds. It takes up NO SPACE to speak of, and we were able to mount it to the wall and hook the plumbing up easily ourselves. We let the electrician hook up the power to the unit. We now store tools in the space where the hot water heater was.

We expect to save about $25 a month over the old 50 gal tank we had...we shall see!!

A SIMPLE, GREEN WAY TO HEAT WATER FOR MY ENTIRE HOME!
In remodeling my kitchen I found I needed to move my refrigerator to where my 50 gallon water heater sat, so I decided to go tankless.

I bought the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 36 from AMAZON (Compact Appliance) for a little over $700.00 (Great Price!), upgraded my home to 400 AMP service, mounted the Tempra 36 to a wall in my washroom, removed my existing water heater, plumbed all hot & cold water lines to/from the Tempra 36, ran three 35 foot lengths of 6 gauge wire (X2 hot + ground) from the Tempra 36 to my new breaker panel and connected with three 60 AMP two pole breakers.

I fired the beast up after ensuring I had no leaks and lo and behold, NEARLY SCALDING HOT WATER!! ONLY WHEN I WANT IT!!

I am a 100% do-it-your-selfer and believe me, this tankless water heater was simple to install and connect.

IT SHOULD PAY FOR ITSELF WITHIN ONE YEAR'S TIME!! I HIGHLY RECCOMEND IT!!

Customers say's :
Somewhat Disappointed
I bought this unit to replace an 8 year old Ariston 2.5G tank point-of-use, used only for hand washing. The DHC 4-2 works, but there is a noticable few second delay for heated water, and the temperatiure fluctuates from barely warm to being too hot while washing hands. S-E Tech support is generally very nice and attempts to be helpful, but no solution, and some suggestions were electrical nonsense (I'm an old electrical engineer). They did offer to replace the unit if I want to return it, but removing the unit, paying for shipping, and having to re-install is more hassle than I'm willing to undertake. Maybe my expectations were unrealistic compared to tanked POU. On the plus side, the unit is well constructed and of apparent very good quality.

best 20 amp point of service heater
For what is out there in the market, this is the best quality in a 240V 20A size. I tried others but they were primarily junk. I only wish they offered this size element in a temperature controlled model like the larger heaters. The water is way too hot and a temperature controlled external hot/cold water mix valve won't work in my application due to being on a lower water pressure private well at the end of a long supply line. In fact, when the well is at the low end of its pressure cycle the heater won't turn on due to lack of adequate volume flow (which a mix valve would make worse). My next modification will be a power relay and thermocouple for temperature control.

It works!!
Pretty ok, I ended up using this one for hot tap water to the kitchen and as a pre-heater for a 'CORAL http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0026382Z4 shower head. Works good for a shower if the water is not too cold in the supply line. So pre heat it first and all is good, right? Right, works good but needs adjusting through the seasons. I am pretty sure I am saving on the electric bill. A solar pre-heater may save me more and provide more supply temp stability. Electricity is funny stuff- If you don't know what your doing....get someone who does, wire gauges and breakers are specific for a reason.

Excellent water heater, but installation more expensive than you'd think
The Tempra 24 Plus kicks out precise temperature hot water instantly and maintains a steady tempreature. Seems like very high quality and with the digital temperature readout very easy to use and know what the unit is doing.
While the plumbing installation is simple and the unit does not require any venting, the electrical service installation is very heavy duty. If you have an old house it is very likely that your electrical panel won't handle the two 60-amp curcuits required here. A new panel can cost a couple thousand dollars. Check it out first before buying one of these.
My newer house had enough capacity for the installation and it still cost almost $500, and that was a good price for time and materials with the electrician only.
Even with the professional electrical work, I can still detect a slight bump, or flicker in the lights when you turn on the hot water. Not really a dimming, just a little flicker. Barely perceptable but it's there. It's a very small...

unlimited hot water
this has been a great hot water heater. old tanked hot water heater took a poop and needed to be replaced, had done some research on tankless heaters and decided that it was worth the initial cost. i settled on this heater after some online searching/research as it had pretty good reviews across the internets and was described as fairly easy to install. received my unit fast, important, as i was living with out hot water in the mean time. opened the box and read the install directions...
required install components (not included)
6 gauge wire - you will need enough to run the wire twice from panel box to heater as it will have to be double fused
(2) 60-AMP fuses - this will pull 115 AMP when running
copper plumbing - will vary based on location and current setup
(2) flexible connectors - well worth the extra couple of bucks to make connecting the input and output hoses

all of these things cost me around 200$ at local big box

the install...

Good Product, but you should know some things...
I always have trouble rating anything a 5 because nothing is perfect, as is the case with the Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 Plus. But don't get me wrong - I like it, and I would buy it again.

The Good:
- Gives you hot water when you ask for it and hot water flow never stops (duh)
- Easy to adjust the max temperature
- Simple enough to install (I did not do it myself)
- Run 2 showers at the same time and both get hot water to shower with
- Slightly lower electric bill (but it's kind of hard to tell as seasons change)

The Bad:
- Temperature is not as steady as tank-based water heater when taking a shower. Gets hotter and colder for brief, but uncomfortable, periods
- Washing dishes is either hot or cold, and will not stay at a lukewarm temperature. The best I can guess, this is because of the low flow of water needed to do dishes at the sink; like maybe it doesn't "trigger" the hot water to kick in. Still investigating because...
