For What It's Worth.......
I’m a homeowner and our water heater tank died. So I needed a new gas hot water tank. After reading various reviews pro and con, I decided to go with a tankless gas water heater. I contacted a licensed contractor and he recommended Navien, among others. I did my own research and found Navien is highly recommended and highly rated. The contractor determined that the Navien NPE-180A model would work best for us. Total cost including installation was $2,200. You definitely need a licensed contractor to install unless you are a contractor yourself or an excellent do-it yourself person. However be aware that purchasing it on the Internet or a non-authorized dealer will void the warranty.

Once installed, it’s a beautiful piece of equipment and the extra storage space is a plus. It has all the latest digital technology. My only complaint, is even though the Navien claims to be instantaneous hot water, this is rather misleading. Any hot water you turn on takes...

Emergency situation
Had my Paloma water heater(previous owner install)freeze up during the very cold temps of Jan 2014. Needless to say but it was finished with split copper all through it. Called a friend of mine who worked for Spaeder Plumbing and they showed up 2 days later and installed the above mentioned Navien unit. Could not be happier with this unit. Works flawlessly and had it installed for the asking price of the unit cost on Amazon. I would of paid more. If you have ever been without hot water in single digit temps, with children then you know what I mean by that. Great unit and phenomenal installation although they did have everything there just a few modifications and it was hooked up and ready to go. Very, very happy customer.

Get a Rinnai, they're more reliable with better customer service
I purchased a Navien NR-210 through a local plumber about 16 months ago and until now it has been great. About 4-6 weeks ago the water heater started to shut off with an error code 35. It was sporadic with no apparent rhyme or reason. And now when I run the water to give my kids a bath it constantly switches on and off so the water will heat up and then turn ice cold. It is impossible to get a decent water temperature for a bath. This doesn't happen with lower flow appliances like the shower, faucets, dishwasher, or washing machine. I sent Navien customer service an email and it has been well over a week and they haven't responded. Checking on their website the plumber who installed it doesn't do service so I am now going to have to pay someone to drive almost two hours to service the water heater. For something that is less than 18 months old these problems shouldn't occur. And if these problems do occur the least Navien could do is reply to customer questions.

Cheap to run, heat exchanger leaked at 40 months.
I got one of these back in 2010. I've been really happy with the performance. It used 1/3rd the gas use of my 9 year old builder special tank heater. I did not measure how much electricity it used, but it wasn't noticeable on the power bill in the monthly noise. We never ran out of hot water, and could run the dishwasher and two showers at the same time even in a PA winter.

However, the heat exchanger started leaking after 40 months. Similar story to the other reviewer where Navien looked for any reason to blame something outside their unit, but after some back and forth with my plumber they did step up and do the right thing. They replaced the entire unit with a new NPE-210A.

The cost to install the new heater and the service call ate up about half the savings from the last few years so the efficiency didn't buy me as much as I had hoped. There's something to be said for old reliable tech.

No problems in two years
I have had my Navien NR-210 water heater for two years. The unit has worked perfectly with no problems. It was installed by a professional plumber who seemed to be familiar with tankless heaters.
I my only regret is not getting the NR-210-a instead of the plain 210, because the "A" models have a small internal tank to buffer the hot water, which can be a problem with low-flow shower heads. Other than that, I have no complaints.
As far as savings are concerned, while you will save a little on gas, it would take years to save back the higher initial cost. For example, my over-the-summer gas consumption went from 10-12 "therms" per month to about 2. I pay about $.85 per therm, which comes out to just under $100 per year.

First: the Navien NR-series tankless has only been in service since Oct 2009, so the 2yr+ ownership reviews were done on the CR-series. The CR-series did have issues which were addressed in warranty fixes and massively updated on the NR-series. Second: do your research. I replaced my 17yr old A.O. Smith gas tank with the Navien NR-240A. The NR met my criteria of long warranty, EF, min GPM (zero). It didn't hurt either that I was getting the governments credit either, so I went to energystar.gov to do a lot of research heavy lifting. The "A" model included a small buffer tank (to eliminate the "cold sandwich") and a built in circulation pump. Make sure your plumber (or if you DYI) installs recirculation T's at the longest runs (in my case, master bathroom). Combinded with the built-in circulation pump, this will also eliminate the time it takes to get hot water to your facet (example: from 60sec to 5sec). Do not go with marketing fluff from other manufacturers (such as "market leader",...

DO NOT BUY THIS NAVIEN PRODUCT
Navien NR240A installed on Dec 27 2011.
The reason I puchased this product from a licensed plumbing supplier is that it is warrantied by Navien for 15 years. We'll get back to the warranty and Navien Customer Service in a minute.
Exactly 16 days after the install by a licensed, bonded plumber with experience installing this model, the unit automatically shut itself off and flashed Error Code 16 (heat exchanger). Plumber came out and called Navien Tech Support Dept., who I could hear over speaker phone. Navien Cust Service was rude and condescending, but was able to determine that the 16 day old tankless water heater already needed the mother board replaced. To be fair, Navien did send me a new motherboard via overnight delivery. Now my plumber, who I researched and trust, and who has worked on the Boss' house, explained to Navien that he is a plumber, and not licensed to repair the inner workings of their product. "No problem, we have techs in the area." Well, the...

Navien NR-210A
UPDATE
I have had for about 1 year through winter an I have had no problems! My family loves it!

First I should start by saying I have only had it in operation for two months. The main reason I bought this is a 80 gallon water heater wasn't big enough to meet our hot water demands. (4 kids) this keeps up with our needs. I am very happy with the Navien 210A.

I had 2 quotes to install and the installation quotes where $2500 and $3000 by local plumbers. What a joke and a rip off. I did the research by reading the online guides from the Navien web site. It looked relatively easy and straight forward. I decided to install it myself and then bought the unit. It took me 15hrs and $300 in supplies and tools including renting a core drill to drill through my brick and two trips to Lowes to get supplies and getting the gas line threaded.
The unit has worked with no issues and I did call Navien technical support because I wanted to us the unit before I ran the...

Disappointing
I had this unit installed in July of 2010. Worked great for a year. In July of 2011 we started having issues with it turning itself off. By unplugging it and waiting 30 minutes and replugging it in, it would work fine, for a time. Started getting worse to the point where hot water throughout a whole shower is a dream. We called the plumbers in October 2011, November, December, and they are still working on it. Sorry I bought the Navian and wished I'd bought a more well known brand.

Great product
I installed this unit to replace a smaller unit whereby I had to have a separate circ pump and separate electric hot water tank. This unit does it all. Turn a sink tap on, and wala! Hot water. Run 3 things at once, and no problem, plenty of hot water. Install was easy given I already had a tankless and so I had gas and a flue. Once hooked up, a quick call to Navian to verify some settings, and I was all set. The customer service group at Navian was great.

Why go tankless?
I have a Navien CR-180A (gas) and it's the worst water heater I've ever experienced.

1. It doesn't use less gas. I keep records of utility usage and in the summer months my gas bill is no lower with this unit than the previous 30gal tank HWH (hot water heater). If anything, it's slightly higher.

2. It does not supply constant temperature water to my shower. With the old HWH I was able to set the shower up, step in and shower for as long as I liked (probably never more than 15minutes) without readjusting the shower. Now, I must readjust the temperature several times during even the briefest of showers (5 minutes).

3. It doesn't always supply HOT (very warm yes, but not HOT) water. I notice this when setting up the dishwasher. I upped the temperature setting from factory recommended 120 to 125 degrees. I turn on the hot water tap at the kitchen faucet and let it run to heat the water in the line so the dishwasher draws hot water without a cold...

Never Navien!!
If you are considering purchasing a Navien Tankless hot water heater, PLEASE save yourself the headache! I had purchased three Navien heaters for two of my homes, and I have had nothing but problems with getting hot water for both houses on a regular basis. After remaining patient for two years of constant issues of trying to obtain regular hot water flow, (and several expensive bills of constant visits from my plumber), I finally discarded my Navien water heaters. To the trash they went! $$$$

With Navien, there was no fuel savings, there was the long delay of getting hot water to appliances and to the bathroom showers, (even with a recirculating system), and then to top it all off, ONCE the water temperature was perfect for showering, the water turned cold then scalding, scalding then cold! Clearly the product is NOT worth your consideration. Let my lesson of outrageous expense of THREE navien hot water heaters, then the cost of innumerable plumber visits to...

Cut my gas bill in half
I love this, I live in a 3 bed / 1 bath home. Got this to replace a 40 gallon water heater that was dying. I can do dishes, laundry and shower all at the same time.

Very effective and efficient heater; buffer tank could use some work
I have an NPE-240A for almost a month now. It was installed by a licensed plumber. The unit was connected to pre-existing 3/4" natural gas. The PVC for exhausting gasses was routed through the old water heater vent. The condensate line was connected using insulated PEX and terminated within a sloped PVC pipe that routes the condensate to the exterior of the house where it drains / evaporates on our rear porch. Note that the condensate is slightly acidic as isn't just water; it is carbonic acid with a PH of ~2-4. This is due to the gasses, including CO, being cooled in the secondary heat exchanger enough for water to condensate out while incorporating the CO. Thus be mindful of where the acidic condensate drains.

The NPE-240A is unique in that it incorporates a 0.5 gallon buffer tank. The buffer tank is meant to help prevent cold water sandwiches, and if recirculation is always on, allow < 0.5 GPM flow rates for hot water. However, if recirculation is not enabled,...

I am impressed!
I replaced a rusted out 50 gallon gas hot water heater with the Navien NPE 240A tankless hot water heater. I had it installed by a licensed plumbing contractor - I can't see the average homeowner doing this themselves. (in fact, I was a licensed plumber for many years but still was more comfortable having someone else do it as he had the proper tools and I'm not as young as I used to be).

Installation was not difficult - for my plumber - in fact the 1/2" gas connection and 2" PVC vent piping made for simple work. Many tankless need a 3/4" gas line and 3" pipe. That extra inch of vent pipe is a HUGE deal. There is a fair amount of piping required on the water end - get the installation valve kit. It will help in servicing the unit later on.

The Navien also has a recirculating pump built in, which can work internally as well as run an external recirculating line, should you have one in the house. Coupled with a small tank in the unit, there is less fluctuation...

Caution for warranty
I love my Navien water heater! Delivers endless hot water, as promised.. BE AWARE that if you purchase your Navien water heater online, you are not buying ANY factory warrranty, regardless of what the papers inside the box say or what the website you are buying from says. The fine print states that the unit MUST be purchased from a plumber through wholesale distribution to receive the excellent warranty offered by Navien. Keep this in mind when purchacing!!!
